About This Performance

PSO Music Director Manfred Honeck closes the Paris Festival with sheer vigor. The vibrant and exceptional music for the ballet Pétrouchka is an invention of Igor Stravinsky through his collaboration with the famous Ballets Russes in Paris. Then, hear three pieces inspired by the influence of American jazz in Paris.

CONCERT PRELUDE: A Window into the Exotic with Mary E. Davis
6:45 pm (Friday) and 1:15 pm (Sunday), on stage

In early 20th century Paris, attraction to all things exotic ran high.  For artists, the imperative to create work that was both profoundly expressive and perceptibly modern fueled interest in unfamiliar cultures–from pagan Russia to contemporary Manhattan–which in turn could serve as the source for new methods, approaches, and materials.  This talk by Mary E. Davis, Professor of Musicology at Case Western Reserve University, explores the radical and diverse outcomes of these engagements with the exotic, examining in particular their links to contemporary style, fashion, and technology.

CINEMATHEQUE:  Charlie Chaplin – Silent Shorts with live accompaniment
6:45 pm (Friday) and 1:15 pm (Sunday), Dorothy Porter Simmons Regency Rooms

Features selections from the set of silent shorts Chaplin created for the Mutual Studios during the 1910s, with live accompaniment by Tom Roberts, piano.
