About This Performance

With Principal Guest Conductor Leonard Slatkin, Olga Kern brings her powerful artistry to Rachmaninoff's virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 3, a piece she performed at the 11th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. The Third Symphony established William Schuman as one of the great American composers. Commissioned by Broadway and Met star David Pittsinger, Scott Eyerly’s Arlington Sons depicts a father and son visiting Arlington Cemetery to watch the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns. It is believed to be the first vocal piece written for a father and son. Adding resonance to the themes of fatherhood, “sonhood” and patriotism, Mr. Pittsinger's own father was a U.S. Army veteran and a guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns. This orchestral world premiere of Arlington Sons is presented by UPMC for Life.
