Yahli Toren

Soprano Yahli Toren is recognized as one of the foremost vocalists in Israel.  Her repertoire covers a wide range of styles and genres, from early Baroque through the avant-garde, as well as Middle Eastern and Judeo-Spanish folk traditions.  As a composer, she frequently performs her own songs in concerts and festivals.  A graduate of the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem and the Universitat der Künste in Berlin, Ms. Toren has performed as soloist with several major orchestras and appeared on radio and TV broadcasts in Israel and Europe.

Her Ladino songs recitals with saxophonist Tobias Rüger received critical acclaim in Portugal, Germany, England, and Israel.  The show was broadcast on national Portuguese TV and was later recorded on an album, tradición y modernidad.

Ms. Toren appears regularly with the Musica Nova Ensemble for contemporary music as well as various theaters in Israel.  She performs as the leading singer of the modern ensemble “bayit shlishi” (the third house).  She created the role of Leah in Ofer Ben-Amots’ chamber opera “The Dybbuk” for productions in Colorado Springs, Montreal, Michelstadt, Germany, and Israel’s Kfar Blum Festival.

As a highly sought-after teacher, she has developed a unique approach to singing based on inter-relationships between voice and development, movement, breathing and acting, with self-awareness and confidence building.  Ms. Toren serves on the faculty of the Haifa Music Conservatory and the following schools and theaters in Tel Aviv: the Drama Department of the Seminar Ha-Kibbutzim, the Nissan Nativ Performing School, and the Bikurey Ha-yitim Ensemble.
