Ronald Cantelm began playing the bass in 1965 after receiving piano lessons from his grandparents at the age of six. He received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music in his native Philadelphia.

Among his teachers are Roger Scott, Edward Arian and Fred Marsh of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Warren Benfield of the Chicago Symphony, Eligio Rossi and Homer Mensch. Following graduation, he played for two seasons with the New Orleans Philharmonic before joining the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in 1975.

In his spare time, Mr. Cantelm repairs stringed instruments, a skill which he acquired as an apprentice to Richard McKeown and Chet Olson. He also enjoys sports, especially skiing, tennis and golf. His wife is a Special Education teacher in McKeesport.
