Cellist Hampton Mallory was born in Hong Kong, and lived for half of his childhood in Japan and Taiwan. Following graduation from Harvard College, he won a Fulbright Foreign Grant for a year's study with Maurice Gendron in Paris. Upon returning to the United States, he studied with David Soyer at the Curtis Institute of Music. Mr. Mallory has participated at the Aspen and Marlboro music festivals. He joined the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra cello section in 1978 after several years as a free-lance artist in Philadelphia.

Mr. Mallory has served in a leadership capacity on most committees of the Pittsburgh Symphony, including a number of negotiating committees. From 1994-2004, he served as a board member of the League of American Orchestras, and in 2005 and 2006 he was on the faculty of the Orchestra Leadership Academy's Institutional Vision Seminar. He is married to fellow PSO cellist Lauren Scott Mallory, and they have two grown children.
