PSO Cellist Lauren Scott Mallory grew up in a musical family in Greensboro, N.C., and continued her studies at Indiana University as a pupil of Janos Starker. After graduating with a Bachelor's in Music in 1969, Lauren joined the Pittsburgh Symphony. In 1979, she won the title of Associate Principal Cellist, a position she held until 2001. She is now delighted to be back in the section. Over the years, Lauren has been active in recital and chamber music performances in Pittsburgh and has performed as soloist with the PSO, the New Hampshire Festival and Eastern Music Festival. Formerly an instructor at the University of Pittsburgh and Chatham University, she now teaches only a limited number of private cello students. She is married to PSO cellist Hampton Mallory and they are the proud parents of two grown children. Although Lauren has a private pilot's license she no longer flies, preferring instead to spend most of her free time gardening (she is a Master Gardener) and finding the family ancestors. She also enjoys bicycling, reading, and cooking. Lauren plays a cello made for her in 1991 by Peter and Wendela Moes.
