The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the National Repertory Orchestra announce a two year pre-professional program designed to enable one young African American musician to dedicate themselves to the pursuit of an orchestral career. This program is open to all standard orchestral instruments (except keyboard).

The Orchestra Training Program for African American Musicians is one of several programs in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s Diversity Plan. The Diversity Plan outlines a multifaceted approach to promoting conversations about diversity in orchestra settings, recruiting leadership and advisors for diversity initiatives, and building opportunities for performance on and off the orchestral concert stage to better reflect the diverse communities and audiences that orchestras serve.

Program Elements:

  • Audition preparation
  • Training with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra
  • Education and Community Engagement program participation
  • Annual stipend
  • Additional stipends towards health insurance, audition expenses and professional development

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must be African American musicians between the ages of 18-30 at the start date of the program.
  • Applicants must also play a standard orchestral instruments (no keyboard).

Audition Date/Repertoire:

Auditions for the 2011-2013 fellowship are now complete. Please check back during the fall of 2012 for more information and repertoire lists.
