Manfred Honeck

Music Director

Manfred Honeck was born in Austria and studied music at the Academy of Music in Vienna. An accomplished violinist and violist, Honeck spent more than 10 years as a member of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera Orchestra. It is this experience that heavily influenced his conducting and helped give it a distinctive stamp.

As composer, Marvin Hamlisch has won virtually every major award that exists: three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, a Tony and three Golden Globe awards; his groundbreaking show, A Chorus Line, received the Pulitzer Prize. He is the composer of more than forty motion picture scores including his Oscar-winning score and song for The Way We Were and his adaptation of Scott Joplin's music for The Sting, for which he received a third Oscar.

Internationally renowned American conductor Leonard Slatkin began his appointment as the 12th Music Director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra commencing with the 2008-2009 season, and also began serving as Principal Guest Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. His performances throughout North America, Europe and the Far East have been distinguished by imaginative programming and highly praised interpretations of both the standard and contemporary symphonic repertoire. Additionally, he is well-known for his arts advocacy work on behalf of music education.

Gianandrea Noseda is the Music Director of Teatro Regio in Turin since September 2007, Chief Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic in Manchester after four years as Principal Conductor – a way to pride the total commitment and the significant achievements of this collaboration – the Principal Conductor of the Orquesta de Cadaqués since 1998 and since 2000 he serves as Artistic Director of the Stresa Festival (one of the historical Italian Music festivals). Gianandrea Noseda became the first foreign Principal Guest Conductor at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1997 where he also set up the 'Mariinsky Young Philharmonic Orchestra' and served as its Principal Conductor; between 1999 and 2003 he has been the Principal Guest Conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic and of the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, Turin between 2003 and 2006.

Lawrence Loh

Resident Conductor

Lawrence Loh was promoted to Resident Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra starting in the 2007-2008 season. He is one of the most exciting young talents on the classical music scene today. He was brought to national attention in February 2004 when he substituted last-minute for an ailing Charles Dutoit with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Conducting Stravinsky's Petrouchka and Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, Loh received enthusiastic acclaim from orchestra players, audience members and critics, alike.

Thomas Hong

Assistant Conductor

Thomas Hong is the new assistant conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and associate conductor of the Seattle Symphony. Previously, he was assistant conductor of Orchestre National de France and also associate conductor of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. As assistant conductor of Orchestre National de France, Mr. Hong has participated in various tours all over Europe, including most recently a momentous occasion where Maestro Kurt Masur performed the complete Beethoven symphonies in Frankfurt and Baden-baden.
