PSO Diversity Focus:

The PSO recognizes its role and responsibility as an organization that can stimulate regional growth, community pride, and economic strength. The PSO is committed to strengthening the region by utilizing all of the talent and resources in the area. This will be done by building and honoring diversity in the multiple stakeholder groups that are tied to the PSO – our musicians, staff/leadership, board, vendors/suppliers/contractors, educational and community-based partners, and patrons/donors.

Two strategic initiatives which align with the PSO's strategic plan that will be addressed throughout this plan are:
  • Annuity – which encourages building deep, personal connections to musicians, artists, managers, and community members over time
  • Strengthening the region (also known as "revitalization of Pittsburgh") – which emphasizes the PSO as a leader in the strengthening of the city and addresses the need for the PSO to reflect the community as a whole. This also encompasses furthering high quality orchestral music education experiences for residents and cultivating future orchestral musicians.

PSO Diversity Commitment:

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra believes that we belong to the Pittsburgh area community. We are a musical ambassador and representative of Pittsburgh regionally, nationally, and internationally. In all that we do, we must strive to represent and be inclusive of the community we serve. Honoring and supporting diversity is key to building connection and relevance with our community at large, which builds our audiences and guarantees our livelihood for the future.

Building relationships with and seeking the participation of a broad range of people and communities informs the work of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's staff, musicians, and board. It broadens and challenges our perspectives as an organization, providing opportunity for us to constantly challenge our organizational norms, discover new ways to fulfill our mission, and uncover new solutions to our daily challenges. Seeking the input and insight of a diverse array of people from a wide variety of personal experiences broadens our perspectives and allows us to best serve the needs of the Pittsburgh area community.

The PSO benefits from experiencing the artistic and cultural richness of the diverse set of communities with whom we work. Diversity is key to expanding our problem solving abilities, and supports the cultivation of a creative and intellectually stimulating environment that honors differences in perspectives and personal experiences. The PSO benefits as an organization from experiencing the unique perspectives of a wide range of individuals. We benefit by connecting personally with local residents and exploring new ways to speak to these residents on a personal level. The PSO is committed to building connections with a diverse array of area residents, making future interactions more meaningful, creating a lifetime of enrichment through music, and continually builds new relationships between the Orchestra and area residents.
